To avoid malnutrition, be sure to give your trees an adequate amount of micronutrients, such as magnesium sulfate, limestone,
gypsum, iron, and zinc but only if a tree is in an environment that most nutrients can not be found in the soil. Most, trees
need very limited amounts of these compounds, and an overabundance can be harmful. In most situations, trees get their nutrients
naturally from the environment and do not need additional nutritional help. Leaves and natural organic decay usually can provide
all that a tree may need. A certified arborists can advise and help you maintain the beauty of your trees and help ensure
the value of your property investment.
Frost damage can be prevented if your tree’s leaves stay hydrated
during a period of severe cold. Wrapping them prior to the cold temperatures can protect them from dehydration during the
winter months.
Borer insects are very hard to anticipate or eliminate. The best defense is simply maintaining your
tree’s general health so it can bounce back if it does develop an infestation. Trees can be very hardy if maintained
properly.
Avoid over watering or poor drainage which can cause root rot in your trees. Maintain any under ground
sprinkler system to avoid over watering and direct spraying of trees. Mulch two inches around the base of the tree covering
the roots but avoid direct contact with the bark of the tree. Mulch will protect the roots from temperature fluctuations,
keep weeds outs and during warm weather will keep the moisture from evaporation.
Soil can become compacted during
construction of a new home due to heavy equipment usage. Tree roots can become affected and die over time. Tree roots
need oxygen in order for the well being of the tree. Soil aeration can reverse the effects of soil compaction and prevent
the tree roots from dying back and eventually killing the tree.
A qualified certified arborist knows that when
pruning any tree that no more than 1/3 of the canopy should be removed at any one time. Over pruning stresses the roots of
trees and can ultimately kill a tree. Trees need to be able to photosynthesize and removal of the majority of green growth
can cause a tree to die.
